»Early music is not a question of instruments, but of style«, says violinist and conductor Jean-Christophe Spinosi. He was initially regarded as a Vivaldi specialist, but he wants nothing to do with such labels. All the more so with music that is timeless and speaks directly to the audience.
»I am not an opera conductor and not a ‘Baroque musician’; I simply make music«, says Spinosi. That is why it always sounds, first and foremost, completely undogmatic and musical when he brings the old masters into the here and now – and this is already the eighth time he has done so together with the musicians of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. This time, the focus is on Handel’s »Water Music« – a sonic splendor for which the program prepares the audience step by step, so to speak, through concertos for two, three, and finally four solo instruments. Vivaldi also gets a chance to shine here; Spinosi is returning to his roots—though he knows: »Vivaldi’s music brooks no routine. You have to be emotionally invested in every performance and take a fresh risk with it«.
