From Schleswig to Munich, that’s over 900 km straight through Germany. A greater distance within the country is hardly possible. And with this distance from his home, Joachim begins his new life.
He is just twenty years old and has surprisingly received one of the few coveted spots at the prestigious Otto Falckenberg School of Dramatic Art in Munich. So, it’s out of the north and into the big city. However, since he can't afford an apartment in Munich, he temporarily moves in with his grandparents in their bourgeois villa in chic Nymphenburg.
The distance couldn’t be bigger: During the day he sweats in school practicing Aikido rolls, struggles in speech class, practices his role as a hippo with texts by Fontane, and feels lost.
In the evenings, he slips into the sheltered world of his grandparents, which seems as though it is frozen in time. Here everything has its place, its structure, and order. Even the everyday enjoyment of alcoholic drinks follows its own choreography. But the longer Joachim's stay lasts (and it keeps on lasting), the more he notices small irritations and deviations in the grandparents’ system. The grandfather repeatedly falls down the basement stairs, but neither wine bottles nor bones break.
Conversations drag on in the evening as they search for names from the past or become so exhausting due to misunderstandings that the grandparents give up in exhaustion and prefer to lie down on the fluffy carpet and listen to music.
Joachim is torn between worlds and expectations. The “gap” within him painfully comes to the forefront and drives him to search for his own identity. Only one thing seems certain: as an actor, he is completely unsuitable! Because how on earth is one supposed to smile with nipples?
“Ach, diese Lücke, diese entsetzliche Lücke” is a brilliantly written, emotional, tragicomic novel that cannot find a better place than the Brunnentheater to be told.
Joachim Meyerhoff has an infallible eye for the absurd and grotesque and has created a tribute to his beloved grandparents and a wonderful narrative about the unique challenges faced by an actor who perhaps doesn’t even want to become one.
