Torsten Goods - Soul Deep
Soul Deep
The soul is what makes a person – their innermost, most honest essence. The deeper, the better. "My soul has grown deep like the rivers," wrote the Black poet Langston Hughes, very much in Goethe's sense, for "A person's soul is like water." The German soul singer and exceptional guitarist Torsten Goods now flows into our ears with "Soul Deep," his eighth album, far more than just a continuation of his successful album "Soul Searching." The twelve new pieces, either self-written or in collaboration with his British Soul Brother Bluey Maunick from Incognito, present the 44-year-old as a mature artist, influenced by soul, but also jazz, blues, and the summery West Coast/AOR sounds of the late 70s in California. As virtuosic as this music may be, so polished and produced, the sounds of the voice(s) and instruments deeply touch the soul of the listeners. It is balm and enrichment for everyone, profound and intense, simply "Soul Deep."
The new album tells the personal stories of the "gifted both as a guitarist and a singer" Torsten Goods, according to SZ. It also addresses his visual transformation due to alopecia, the shocking and ongoing hair loss, but above all, love hovers over everything. For his soul mate. "Soul Deep" is therefore also thematically a consequence of "Soul Searching": a very personal album in which the 44-year-old writes about stories from his life and his relationship with his wife, such as the yearning ballad "Summertime Heartache," complete with strings and saxophone by Jakob Manz, the Steely Dan tribute "Summer Rain," the beautiful "Live by the Heart," sung in duet with the wonderful Kim Sanders, or, of course, the danceable "Rocket Girl."
His "Soul Deep" tour in 2025 will take Torsten Goods through all of Germany again in autumn 2025 and spring 2026, but also to Austria, Switzerland, the UK, and Ireland, the homeland of his mother. Joining him are Jan Miserre on keyboards and piano, Felix Lehrmann on drums, and Björn Werra on bass, in other words: the band behind the new album, absolute experts, perfectly in sync in this formation for sixteen years. At the center of these concerts is, of course, the music from the new album, but fan favorites from "Soul Searching" and Torsten's back catalog must not be missed. Each concert thus becomes a unique experience, a celebration full of deeply felt, virtuously played acoustic feel-good music. "Smooth vocals, fast guitars, and feel-good grooves" make up the soul of this musical experience.
