Future Tongues nimmt seinen Ausgangspunkt in der biblischen Erzählung vom Turmbau zu Babel, um über die Zukunft menschlicher Kommunikation nachzudenken. Die Arbeit verweist außerdem auf den Science-Fiction-Pornofilm Café Flesh (1982), in dem nach einer nuklearen Apokalypse die Mehrheit der Menschen ihre Libido verliert, während eine sex-positive Minderheit Akte sexuellen Theaters vor fasziniertem Publikum inszeniert. Sprache wird hier als ein stetiger Prozess der Aushandlung von Differenz verstanden.
Future Tongues widmet sich analogen Kommunikationstechnologien wie Sprache und Berührung. Intimität – sowohl die Lust als auch das Unbehagen, das Nähe mit sich bringen kann – wird bewahrt und zugleich ausgestellt wie eine ausgestorbene Sprache oder ein Relikt der Vergangenheit in unserer beschleunigten digitalen Kultur. Welche Formen verkörperter Kommunikation brauchen wir heute? Wer hat das Recht, seine eigene Sprache zu sprechen? Können wir unserer kollektiven Intuition vertrauen, bevor wir uns der Autorität von Wissen und Macht beugen?

Future Tongues parts from the biblical story of the tower of Babel to speculate about the future of human communication. The work also references the 1982 science fiction porn film Café Flesh where, in the aftermath of a nuclear apocalypse, the majority of people lose their sex drive, while a sex positive minority engages in acts of sexual theatre in front of fascinated audiences.
Understanding language as a constant practice of negotiating difference, Future Tongues approaches analogue communication technologies, like speech and touch. Intimacy – both pleasure and discomfort brought on by closeness – is preserved and exhibited like an extinct language or a relic of the past in our accelerated digital culture. What forms of embodied communication do we need today? Who has the right to speak their own language? Can we trust our collective intuition before we obey the authority of knowledge and power?
